PROCESSES FOR STAINED GLASS
The cartoon is next, drawn or printed actual size with all pieces numbered.
Choices of materials and processes are made according to imagery. Some are shown below.
Cutting glass and use of light box.
Here paint is applied and removed by brush, transfer, comb, needle etc.
Stencils may be cut by hand or digital cutter. They are used as masks for painting, staining, enamelling, screenprinting, sandblasting or etching when sharp edges are required.
Example of sandblasted lettering. The alphabet was scanned, organised on computer screen, then the stencil was cut by machine.
Original penwork alphabet from "Calligraphy", Arthur Baker, Dover Pictorial Archive, 1973
Arial lettering sandblasted onto green glass.
