DESIGNING FOR STAINED GLASS

I adapt my approach to suit you, the needs of buildings and conditions on site.

The site may be built or under construction. Usually I visit at an early stage to assess light, period, access and structure, and take measurements. Sometimes I can estimate from a picture of the site and your measurements, plus your ideas - representational, abstract, detailed, simple etc.

I can taylor designs to fit your budget, or make a series of designs with different prices.

Pattern books provide starting points for some clients who may want to match new stained glass to styles and periods of older buildings, domestic or public. I have a good collection.

You may have pictures that you want translated into glass. Almost anything can be adapted, reshaped or combined. Anything with copyright must be redrawn and acknowledged. For example the central sketch above is mine from a painting by Philip Wilson Steer. Existing stained glass can be recreated to fit a different size or shape as above right, adapted here.

Whatever your starting point, preliminary ideas and colour variations can be exchanged and discussed by phone, post or e-mail.

When the design is chosen the contract is agreed and the price is finalised. Usually I ask for one third as a deposit to pay for materials and initial costs. Then work begins on the cartoon. The remaining two thirds of the price is due when the project is finished - e.g. a window is installed.
